PREVIEW: Massive Railway & Automobilia Auctions
AUCTION 1: ALL ABOARD
The upcoming Railway memorabilia auction is a one way ticket to nostalgia, with over 800 truly unique items from Australia’s locomotive history on offer.
Conducted live in the Manshed Auction Rooms in Hornsby, NSW, as well as online, it’ll be so large that it’s been split over two days (22nd & 23rd Feb)
This is no ordinary auction, with items such as an Original Destination Board, Station Benches, Railway crossing signs and Signal lights attracting significant bids early on.
Our favourite has to be 10m long bus stop suburb roll call, as well as the individual suburb station benches, which we expect to attract corporate or council interest (see below).
Anything and everything you can think of is on offer, from bus tote bags, ticket machines & stampers, worker lamps, wall clocks, even the sign to the ladies bathroom!
Train enthusiasts will be eager to jump on board for this one, or budding historian for that matter.

AUCTION 2: I SAW THE SIGN(S)
Enamel signs are big business right now, a subsection of the booming Automobilia scene. The treasure trove recently unearthed by Keith Levy of Manshed Auctions was so big that it took his breath away.
“This is one of the finest collections I’ve ever stumbled across” states Levy
The client, a private working-class man whom kept his collection low-key, went to great lengths to individually wrap and store each item.
For those with an innate history of petroliana, may be aware that in 1916, Vacuum Oil introduced its popular "Plume" (petrol) and "Laurel" (kerosene) brands to the Australian market which would develop significant operations. It was in the 1930’s that these brands were consolidated into what is known today as Mobil. These brands are all strongly represented.
Signs from Shell, BP, Castrol, Golden Fleece and Ampol are also prominent.
This is a must for any motoring history buff, a true event.
SHELL OUT A FORTUNE
Considering the mammoth amount Shell signs have gone for recently, (Scammell's Auctions unearthed a stickman embossed Shell sign that fetched over $17,000), who knows what the several Shell signs will fetch.
The below embossed four-panel sign is a true gem, with high figures and interest expected.
It's not just for automobilia fans, as numerous early 20th century consumer staples are also on offer, from well-known companies Peters Ice Cream, Coca Cola, Sydney Mail and numerous cigarette and alcoholic brands.
